My old 1966 Oysterdate is more comfortable to wear than my modern Datejust (which is already a very comfortable watch to wear). The manual wind case is thin and sits very nicely on the wrist. You're right though that he should save up and get something newer and more robust as an everyday watch.

Genuine Rolex crystals haven't been made for this watch in some time. It wouldn't be all that surprising to find an aftermarket one given they are routinely replaced due to wear. I replaced the crystal on my 5 digit with a genuine Rolex NOS one, but it was very hard to find and insanely expensive. Great watch. Fits you perfectly. About the only recommendation for it is get a bracelet and make sure the mainspring gets replaced first chance you get - also keep an eye on the crown tube, a manually wound watch like this gets wear on that and it needs fixing occasionally. Nice to see an old watch on a young wrist.
